Wager this

A few people have asked why I’m not covering the March Madness. Simple answer- I hate watching basketball. I have nothing against playing it. I mean, what 5’ 8” chick can’t shoot some hoops? But watching basketball has gotten boring ever since the players stopped wearing daisy dukes on the courts. Well that, and my college (UCSD) was more a nerds conglomerate than an athlete’s paradise so I don’t have much of a college sports affiliation. There are so many other “sporting” events I’d rather watch:

  1. Midget wrestling
  2. Speed foosball
  3. Competitive whack-a-mole
  4. Beer pong
  5. Medieval Times jousting tournament
  6. Demolition bumper cars
  7. Blindfolded laser tag
  8. Niagara Falls barrel plunge
  9. Marco Polo
  10. Roller derby

While the college basketball fans crowd the Sportsbook rooms, anyone up for a rousing game of Underwater Archery?

Philly Beer Week Quad

img_0149-12Sunday began at the Stone Brunch at Teresa’s with a 12th Anniversary Chocolate Oatmeal Stout and a plate of Huevos Piccante to fill my stomach before catching the train to Philly. I attended the VIP session at Zythos with Chris Bauweraerts from Brasserie d’Achouffe, which promised some very special beers including rare lambic casks from Hannsens. Not quite- we sampled Duvel Classic, Maredsous 10, Ommegang Abbaye 12 and Chocolate Indulgence (paired with a melt in my mouth Belgian chocolate truffle), and Houblon Chouffe. These aren’t disappointing beers my any means, but not exactly rare.

Philly Beer Week Tripel

March 22nd, 2009 by sarah

At Capone’s Allagash event Saturday, brewer Rob Todd filled me in on his new creation, Gargamel, which he actually named without any thought to the Smurfs wizardly character. He said Gargamel originated when a (former knucklehead) employee used the wrong malt in a beer recipe. The mistake was discovered the next day by the brewer and too late to correct, they performed some magic to the recipe, adding a potion or two and sat on it, tasting it every other full moon or so. It wasn’t anything special until near the end of last year, when age became beauty and the elixir came into its own. The BA Extreme Beer fest was one of the few places it’s been distributed to us commonfolk, but about 60 cases will be bottled and available before the summer. I’ll let you know the exact date after I’ve secured my booty! Rob said the best beers tend to start as accidents so maybe we can look forward to another delicious mistake coined “Azrael.”

Philly Beer Week Dubbel

crw_0126-1crw_0130-2img_0131-3The long weekend was blurry, er… went by in a blur.  By sheer cowinkydink, the Grey Lodge Firkenteenth coincided with PBW.  The early bird catches the worm(wood).  Well, not really, but even with us AM Imbibers, we still couldn’t get anything to kick!  We gave up still in the first “round” but I did enjoy the Dock Street Hop Garden and Sierra Nevada Stout.

Philly Beer Week Single

March 17th, 2009 by sarah

img_0107-2-1Whew, what a firkin week!!! Friends don’t let friends drink and blog so my computer has been off-limits, but it’s now time for a little PBW wrap-up, Part 1. I missed the opening weekend of PBW due to a previously planned car event in Rochester NY (definitely NOT a beer utopia…) and didn’t get a chance to tap into the festivities until the start of the week after work. Monday began at the Flanigan’s Boathouse Happy Hour in Conshohocken for the Meet the Brewer event with Rudi Ghequire from Palm/Rodenbach.
