I’ve been hesitant to exclaim my excitement for the FIRST PLACE San Diego Padres because I’m sure I just jinxed it, but wow, what a streak it is (no past tense I hope…). Most teams obviously aren’t jumping for joy this early in the season, but Padres fans know we’ve got to celebrate these little accomplishments and hope this is the year the team can make it happen. I was nervous with the 4-3 nail-biter over the Dodgers last Thursday that started with an Adrian Gonzalez solo shot and ended with a three run rally in the eighth inning. Friday’s game was more interesting. After the bottom of the sixth, the umps called the teams off the field for a very rare 51 minute rain delay. With the Padres up 4-2 in the eighth and a runner on first and none out, Scott Hairston made a leaping snag of Bengie Molina’s fly ball near the top of the fence in left center. He later hit a three run homer and the Pads ended up on top 7-3. Jake Peavy pitched Saturday’s game looking much better than he did in the season opener loss last week. He went 8 1/3 innings and received some offense help as Adrian Gonzalez drove in the RBI’s and Henry Blanco hit two home runs and the Padres beat the Giants 6-3. Last night, Chris Young threw seven strong innings and Nick Hundley had a career high four hits as the Padres overcame the Giants 6-1, sweeping the 3 game series with San Francisco, and going three games over .500 for a 5-2 record. I’ll keep rubbing that Troll doll to try to keep this streak going.
Go Padres!! Love your writing.
