Mother Nature crashed the 4th annual Belgium Comes to West Chester event last Saturday at Iron Hill, dumping copious amounts of powder on the streets. While the locals crowded the front bar (mostly because their cars were stuck under 2′ of snow), it took awhile for the beer geeks to dig their cars out and slide on ice sheets to find the last few parking spaces. But if you brew it, they will come. I actually appreciated having a little elbow room to double fist two of the more than 40 beers on tap from Iron Hill, as well as many guest taps. Some of the coveted IH brews included Farmer Chuck and Nocturnum while Ithaca brought Le Bleu, my favorite of the night.
Bryan’s Brew Lounge was the uber-“secret” inner sanctum of beer. Du Armand, the kinda fruity beer with Drie Fonteinen’s brett yeast, Self Titled, a hoppy brew slightly calmed by a wine barrel, and the Biere de Mars farmhouse ale were among some of the mouth-watering beers you could only find here. You just needed the secret password (“thirsty?”) and desperate look in your eye =).
And a big “i-wish-you-face-plant-in-the-snow” award to the lame ass Fox 29 news crew outside. Besides parking right in front of IH, you get in the way of Larry wheeling in the kegs for the event and then give him no press whatsoever on your lame news program, which coincidentally was the only reason I turned it on that night! I guarantee the sound bytes would have been much more entertaining than the twelve douches who so brilliantly commented “it snowed a lot” that you did feature…
