Sports upsets

Posted In Sports

lakersIt came down to 7 games in the series, but the Lakers claimed their second straight NBA title last night in an 83-79 upset against the Celtics.  I’m surprised myself.  Boston had a 3-2 lead in the series, but the games moved to LA and homefield advantage isn’t just a term.  The Lakers sucked the first half of the game, missing 21 of the first 27 shots, but rallied in the fourth quarter to take it.

But onto more exciting news in the world of futbol.  The real futbol.  Futbol as the world knows it (soccer to most of us Americans).

The US tied Slovenia in this morning’s World Cup game, after trailing 2-0.  Of course, there’s some controversy over a bad call that may have cost Slovenia a late goal, and the win.  Must be the Luck of the American because our only goal to tie England in the first game came on a routine shot that their goalkeeper should have scooped up.  Of course, Slovenia still leads in Group C, otherwise known as Group EASY (England, Algeria, Slovenia, Yanks…)

soccerSerbia upset Germany (3 time champions) scoring the only point minutes after one of Germany’s lead scorers, striker Miroslav Klose, was ejected.  And Spain lost to Switzerland 1-0.  And probably more embarrassing than just losing the game, after it was over the girlfriend of the Spanish goalkeeper, a TV reporter, asked him live on camera “How did you muck that up?”  Now that’s a relationship that will last…

I hear those dumbasses they call radio hosts discussing soccer in the morning, when I’m too busy giving a finger or smacking the horn to change the channel.  The resounding argument is soccer hasn’t picked up steam in the US because it’s too slow.  Really?  Have they even watched a match?  I sure can’t follow futbol as much as I’d like to but it’s way more exciting to watch than most sports.  How many people stare at the TV for hours watching golf?  Come on!  GOLF???  Yeah, there’s an exciting sport…  Sorry, the only reason we probably don’t get much televised soccer on TV here is because nobody wants to put up 2 hours of TV that they can’t interrupt for 45 minutes of useless commercial breaks.  When else would we get our cue to get up and fix a snack?
